In Maori tradition, the new moon holds a special significance as a time of beginnings and potential. The story of Rona offers insight into how even mistakes can lead to unexpected transformations and a place among the stars.
Long ago, a woman named Rona ventured out one night to fetch water. The moon, in its new phase, offered little light, and Rona stumbled, becoming increasingly frustrated. She cursed the moon for its dimness, an act of disrespect in Maori culture.
Enraged by Rona's disrespect, the moon reached down and pulled her up towards the heavens. Rona, clinging to a Ngaio tree, was pulled up along with it. Now, Rona is forever visible on the face of the moon, a reminder of the consequences of disrespect and a symbol of the new moon's hidden power. Some say the Ngaio tree can still be seen with her, a testament to her earthly connection.
